Newport, Rhode Island is a city with a population of 24,672 people. It is located in Newport County on Aquidneck Island. It is located 23 miles south of Providence, Rhode Island. It was founded in 1639 and was a major 18th-century port city. Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy both had summer homes there. Newport is known for the Newport Mansions, a preservation society that preserves fourteen historic mansions located in Newport.
