The Crew was an online-only racing video game developed by Ivory Tower in partnership with Ubisoft Reflections and published by Ubisoft. The game released on Playstation 4, Windows, Xbox 360 and Xbox One in December 2014, and on Amazon Luna later in November 2020. It is the first game released in The Crew series. The Crew is succeeded by the 2018 sequel The Crew 2.

The Crew features a main focus on access to a wide range of vehicles whilst exploring a scaled down version of the United States. The Crew had shipped 2 million copies worldwide by January 2015 which lead to Ubisoft's acquisition of the game developer studio Ivory Tower in October 2015. The Crew received 2 major expansions over its lifetime: The Crew Wild Run released on November 17, 2015 and The Crew Calling All Units released November 29, 2016.

The Crew and its downloadable content were delisted from all official storefronts on December 14, 2023. The servers of the game were shut down on March 31st, 2024 rendering the game completely inaccessible for all versions of The Crew.[1]

Story[]

The Crew story focuses on Alex Taylor who works alongside FBI Agent Zoe Winters to expose the corruption of FBI Special Agent Bill Coburn and take down Dennis "Shiv" Jefferson. Doing so will require Alex to complete various races and jobs to climb the ranks of the 5-10 Motor Club with the help of his crew.

Gameplay[]

The Crew offers many different modes with the activites ranging up to 20 hours long in content time. Various events such as races, and free-roam skills are available for the player to partake in. The player's events and skills performance are ranked in the form of 5-10 medals: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

FreeDrive[]

Players can explore the country freely in FreeDrive. Various activities such as events, skills, and getaway can be activated whilst in FreeDrive.

Events[]

The Crew's offers a range of main events for the player compete in and earn rewards such as money, parts, and vehicles. Some of these events are given in the form of missions required to progress through the story.

Skills[]

Players can also participate in mini-games known as skills challenges throughout the world which are triggered in FreeDrive when the player drives through them and involves completing challenges such as shaloms and precision which require the player to travel through all gates in the correct position before the time ends. Introduced in the Calling All Units expansion were crate skills that require the player to courier a package while engaging in a police pursuit. Crates can be played with other players in which they become either a racer or a cop. Scores on these skills and events are saved to a global leaderboard.

Getaway[]

Police presence is prominent throughout the world with various departments operating in certain jurisdictions. Players will be pursued by police upon filling the "Police Watch" meter which is done by performing acts of reckless driving. A range of police units will join the pursuit and use various tactics to apprehend the player depending on the wanted star level the player has obtained. The pursuit ends when the player or most wanted either successfully escapes or is busted by the pursuing units.

Crew[]

Players can invite others to join a crew (2 - 4 players) and play most events and free-roam together.

Collectibles[]

Various collectibles are scattered throughout the world which helps reveal other events, skills, and unlock specific vehicles.

Data Stations[]

Data Stations are Ground stations that reveal the location of story missions, skills, and landmarks in area still undiscovered by the player. There are a total of 30 data stations to collect.

Landmark[]

Landmarks are spots that show famous landmarks and other prominent points of interest to the player. Player is given a first-time small reward upon finding them.

Wreck Parts[]

There are a total of 20 wreck parts to find with 5 parts in each region. Finding all wreck parts will unlock the Proto HuP One.

Achievements[]

100% completion of all events, skills, and collectibles is required in order to unlock all 51 PlayStation trophies: 38 Bronze, 10 Silver, 2 Gold and 1 Platinum and all 50 Xbox achievements worth 1,000 gamerscore.

Vehicles[]

The Crew features a large quantity of vehicles available to unlock and purchase through various methods. Certain specs are available to purchase for each vehicle at different car dealers. These cars can be further modified with visual and performance parts to the player's liking. There are a total of 6 specs in the base game:

  • Fullstock: The base spec for all vehicles and is highly limited in customization options.
  • Street: Available to the player right away and is tailored to normal street driving.
  • Dirt: Unlocked at Lv 10. Features vehicles and parts tailored for paved dirt driving.
  • Performance: Unlocked at Lv 20. Acts as an upgraded spec to Street.
  • Raid: Unlocked at Lv 30. Features vehicles and parts tailored for extreme offroading.
  • Circuit: Unlocked at Lv 40. Features vehicles and parts tailored for closed course circuit racing.

The Crew Wild Run expansion would introduce 3 new specs:

  • Drag: Features vehicles and parts tailored for drag racing.
  • Drift: Features vehicles and parts tailored for drift events.
  • Monster: Features vehicles and parts tailored for Monster Truck events.

The U.S. map in The Crew features over 1,000 real-world landmarks and is about 1,900 square miles. The map is split into five main regions: Midwest, East Coast, The South, Mountain States, and West Coast. Each region features its own unique geographical features.

Reception[]

The Crew received mixed or average reviews on Metacrtic across all platforms with PC scoring 71%, PlayStation 4 scoring 61%, and Xbox One scoring 64%. The game was praised for its open world but criticized for its online functionality and driving physics.
